    Single-phase and three-phase transformers for the range above 16kVA and up to 72.5 kV.These units are designed for power centres,substations and networks; also for pad-mounts.They are used inpublic distribution systems, commercial buildings and industrialcomplexes.The unique core and coil designs and the use of specialturn insulating materials make these

    units extremely compact, reliable and durable.A wide range oftransformer fluids is available including BIOTEMP, which isbiodegradable, less

    flammable and thermally efficient ideal for densely populated orenvironmentally sensitive areas.

    Dry Type Transformers

    For the range 30 kVA to 30 MVA with primary operating voltagesup to 41.5 kV and secondaryoperating voltages up to 36 kV. Theseunits are designed for operation in difficult conditionsenvironmental contamination, fire hazard, high humidity or extremeclimates.

    They provide high level security and are found in hospitals andother public areas, on oilplatforms, in ships, underground railwaysand mines.

    They are extremely tough and resilient and are resistant to theeffects of vibration. They shouldbe considered for earthquake proneareas.

    RESIBLOC transformers have a special resin-encapsulatedconstruction which is unique to ABB.This construction providesgreat strength and flexible design dimensions.

    Special Applications

    Pad Mounted Transformers: These units are delivered from thefactory in tamper-resistant housingsdesigned to prevent access byunauthorised personnel.

    Transformers for variable speed drives: These units can besupplied with primary power ratingsup to 30 MVA. They can besupplied as oil type or dry type. Converter transformers can beusedfor the variable speed drives of high-load, low-speed equipmentsuch as mine hoists, rolling millsand ship propulsion systems. Acorrectly designed installation will provide impressive savingsfromreduced down-time, extended equipment life and lower powercosts.

    Reactors: Single-phase and/or three phase for a wide range ofapplications.

    Boosterformers: Boosterformers are used in order to improve thefunction of electrical powersystems and protect the environmentfrom dangerous stray currents near an electrical railway.

    ABBs liquid filled Power Distribution Transformers range from 16kVA upwards, with primaryvoltages up to 72.5 kV.

    ABB supplies the widest range of power distributiontransformers, including specific designsfor power centres,substations, networks and padmounts.

    Transformers are an integral part of power systems withapplications in industrial facilities,commercial buildings andutility transmission and distribution networks.

    The core and coil design is a unique characteristic of ABBs oiltype transformers, whichgenerate the reliability, durability andreduced dimensions required for their application in utilities,industrial installations and public distribution. ABB oil typetransformers are manu-factured in accordance with the internationalquality standards ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

    Standard features

    Standard features include aluminium or copper windings, epoxy orporcelain bushings, gauges,alarm packages, fans and special signsand tags.

    For heavily polluted environmental conditions ABB offers specialpaint finish cycles in epoxy-coating for the protection of metalliccomponents and electrical equipment.

  • Construction features

    CoreThe core is a series of laminations made from high-quality,grain-oriented silicon steel. The stackedcore provides a superiorflux path by utilising a step-lap that joins the core legs to thetop andbottom yokes. The effective support for the core togetherwith a step-lap joint have reducedexisting currents by up to 40%,sound levels by up to 3 dB and iron losses by up to 10%.

    The core efficiently fills the opening in the coil, leaving aminimum of unused space. Theshort yoke between the legs of the corereduces the external flow between the active leg corematerial,resulting in an increase in efficiency. The rectangular shape ofthe core can be moreuniformly and firmly supported to preventmovement of the laminations so as to improve soundlevelcharacteristics.

    CoilsThe coil features a low voltage rectangular wire or sheetconductor extending along the fullheight of the coil. The layer tolayer insulation, Insuldur, is a thermally upgraded kraft paper.Thelayer insulation is coated with a diamond pattern of B-stage epoxyadhesive, which curesduring processing to form a high strengthbond. This bond keeps the windings from movingduring operation orunder short circuit stresses. The high to low insulation is fittedover the lowvoltage winding and the wire of the strap wound highvoltage is wound directly over the lowvoltage to form a highstrength coil assembly. Generous oil ducts extend along the heightof thecoil to provide cooling in the winding. The staggered,diamond epoxy bonds help assure freeoil flow through thewinding.

    Accurately located taps and a large winding cross section keepunbalanced ampere-turns to a minimum. Unbalanced ampere-turnscreate forces during short circuits that push the highvoltage andlow voltage coils apart vertically. By minimising this imbalancevertical forces arecorrespondingly reduced, thus making the designstronger under short circuit stresses.

    The large areas presented by the layer-type winding result in alow ground capacity, whichgives a nearly straight line surgedistribution throughout the winding. A compact,high-impulse-strength coil is the result.

    Turn insulationABB power distribution transformers are designedto meet specific performance criteria definedby the customer. Somedesign considerations may require the use of traditional crepepaper orNomex tape as turn insulation. Most designs, however,utilise DuraBIL, which is a tough, flexibleand inert turninsulation. It reduces the most prevalent cause of transformerfailure deteriorationof turn insulation.

    DuraBIL is a single layer of epoxy powder depositedelectrostatically and baked on a strapconductor. The process isclosely controlled and monitored to ensure a continuous,uniformcoating. The result is a compact turn insulation withsuperior characteristics including adhesion,flexibility, abrasionresistance and thermal and chemical stability.

    Since DuraBIL is chemically stable, it does not degrade orcontaminate the transformer fluidwith moisture. As a result,DuraBIL maintains its dimensional stability and the coilsstructuralintegrity.

    Layer insulation The Insuldur system of chemical stabilisersthermally upgrades the cellulose insulating materialsto permit 12%higher load capacity. Insuldur can be used with all fluids offeredby ABB for smallpower transformers. Chemical stabilisers delayinsulation breakdown under elevated temperatureconditions.Dimensional changes in the insulating materials are minimised toensure a tighterstructure. The result is greater strength and coilintegrity throughout the life of the transformer.

    The Insuldur system allows a unit rated at 55C to be operated ata 10C higher temperaturewith a 12% increase in kVA capacity.

    Transformer fluidsA choice of transformer fluids, including oil,silicone, MIDEL and BIOTEMP, is offered withmost ratings. Mineraloil is usually recommended for outdoor applications. Silicone andR-Tempare classified as less flammable fluids and are used whenflammability is a concern.

    Transformers designed with less flammable fluids can be used tomeet specific requirementsof non-flammability. BIOTEMP is a new,fully biodegradable, environmentally friendly dielectricfluid thatis also classified as less flammable. BIOTEMP has been shown to be97% biodegradablewithin 21 days by underwriters, laboratories.BIOTEMP is suitable for indoor applications andin areas of highenvironmental sensitivity where any insulating fluid spill wouldrequire expensiveclean-up procedures.

    Transformers can also be manufactured withconservators.

    Other product types with different dimensionsand technicalspecifications can be designedand manufactured on request.

    CoreThe magnetic circuit is of the three columntype with mitredjoints. It is manufacturedwith first-rate, grain oriented siliconironsheets insulated with carlite. The mountedcore is clamped downin order to reducevibrations and minimise noise levels.

    WindingsThe windings are made of either copper oraluminium; theyare insulated with either purecellulose or double enamel.Furthermore, thecomplete columns are manufactured to with-standshort circuit stresses.

    Off-circuit tap changer The tappings (2 x 2.5%) of the HVwinding,are connected to the off-circuit tap changerlocatedhorizontally between the yoke andthe tank cover. The handle islocated on thecover and should be operated when the trans-former isdeactivated. The design preventssetting the off-circuit tap changerto interme-diate positions. The mechanism can also bepadlockedduring normal transformer operation.

    Insulating oilThe mineral oil with its electrical andchemicalcharacteristics is in compliance with the IECStandards andis P.C.B. and P.C.T. free.

    Tank and coverThe sides of the tank are made ofcorrugatedcooling surfaces. The bottom plate, side andframes are ofa welded construction. The weldsare tested for oil tightness. Thethermometerpockets, bushings, tap switch drive and liftinglugs arefitted on the tank cover. The cover isbolted to the tank frame. Theundercarriage iswelded to the bottom plate and the rollersaresuitable for either longitudinal or transversemovements.

    Painting and surface treatmentTransformers are either hot-dipgalvanized orpainted. The metal parts are carefully sand-blasted.The painting system is a single coatone pack epoxy. The top coat isRAL 7033 orcustomized. The hot-dip galvanizing is 70 mminimum.

    Construction features

    DescriptionMDT transformers are used to step down three-phasehigh voltage to low voltage for powerdistribution, mainly inmetropolitan areas andfor industrial applications. The transformersinstandard versions are designed for use inmoderate climates andcan be installed bothoutdoors and indoors. The loading isinaccordance with IEC 354. MDT transformersare hermetically sealed(the tank is completelyfilled with oil) or equipped with oilconser-vator. Both types are equipped with flexiblecorrugated tankwalls enabling sufficient cooling of the transformer. They alsocompen-sate for the changes in the oil volume duringoperation. Anadvantage of the hermeticallysealed transformers is that the oil isnever incontact with the atmosphere thus avoidingperiodic oilanalysis.

    Hard RainPower failure is a nightmare scenario for anyhealthcare institution, and Hermann Hospital in Texas experiencedone in June 2001, when the tropical storm known as Alison hitHouston.

    On 26 June, the hospital ordered a 1000 kVA DistributionTransformer from ABB. Just 60 hours later, the new transformer wasdesigned, built and dispatched. This helped to ease theconsequences of the disaster, already known in history books as therain of terror.

    Construction features

    DescriptionABB has been manufacturing transformers foralmost ahundred years. The production isbased on the development andresearch carriedout in the design department and at the ABBResearchCentre in close cooperation with ourcustomers. This long experiencecombinedwith research and development, guaranteeshigh quality, longlife and reliability.

    Standard features The transformers are manufactured and testedinaccordance with the IEC Publication 76.They are also in compliancewith severalnational standards e.g. BS 171, VDE 0532, SS 4270101etc.

    The transformers can be overloaded inaccordance with IECPublications 354 (1972).The on-load tap-changer and bushingshavebeen chosen so as not to limit the overloadcapability. Thecooling methods are ONAN or ONAN/ONAF.

    Construction features The transformers are of the breathing,conven-tional type provided with an oil conservator.Two types oftransformers are manufactured:- Transformers with off-load tapchanger- Transformers with on-load tap changer

    CoreThe three legged bolt-less core is constructedof grainoriented steel laminations. The jointsbetween the leg and yoke aremitred at 45and interleaved. The cross section of the legiscircular.

    Windings The material of the windings is either copperoraluminum. The windings are made of paperinsulated rectangular wirein the form of multi-layer, disc or helical windings.Transformersprovided with on-load tap-changer usuallyhave aseparate tap winding.

    Off-load tap-changer The transformers are normally equippedwitha 5-position off-load tap-changer on the HighVoltage side, withits handle located on thecover. When changing the tap positionthetransformer has to be un-energized.

    Position 1 of the tap-changer (+ position)corresponds with thehighest ratio, whichgives the lowest voltage on the LowVoltageside. Position 5 of the tap-changer (- position)correspondswith the lowest ratio which conse-quently gives the highest voltageon the LowVoltage side. Transformers having dual primary(orsecondary) voltages are usually equippedwith a selector switch withthe handle on the cover.

    On-load tap changer The on-load tap-changer is mounted onthecover of the main transformer tank. The tap-changer works as aselector switch combiningthe features of a diverter switch and atapselector. The selector switch is located in aseparate oilcompartment which is connectedto its own conservator. The selectorswitch isof the high-speed spring operated type withresistivetransition impedances. The tap-changeris equipped with a protectiverelay. The selectorswitch can be lifted for inspection and theoilin the compartment can be changed separately.

    The on-load tap-changer is provided with amotor drive mechanismfor remote and localcontrol. Normally the motor drive isthree-phaseand the control and the heating circuits are forsinglephase AC supply. When re-quested, DCcircuits can be supplied.

    Insulating oil The mineral oil used in the transformerscom-plies with IEC 296 and several national stan-dards. The oilslows down the ageing process.Transformers with off-load tapchangers canbe delivered filled with silicone oil or MIDELfluid ifrequested.

    TankThe transformer tank is usually of the rigid typeprovidedwith removable radiators connectedto the tank by means of ashut-off valve. Onrequest, the tank can be made vacuumproof.Transformers up to 5 MVA can be supplied witha compact tankwith corrugated cooling fins.

    Painting and surface treatment Prior to the painting of thetank, the cover andoil conservator are sandblasted. Externalsur-faces are painted immediately after pretreatmentwith a two-packepoxy primer coat.

    The finishing is carried out by applying atwo-pack polyurethanepaint to a total thick-ness of 180 m. The colour of the paintisRAL6013 (rush green).

    The inside of the transformer tank is paintedwith a two-packepoxy primer to a thicknessof approx. 30 m. The external surfacesof theradiators are hot dip galvanized to a thicknessof approx. 60m. Corrugated tanks are flowpainted with alkyd primer and acrylicfinish to a total thickness of 80 m. The conservatorand the bottompart of the tank are paintedinternally.

    Options and accessories The transformers are fitted with thefollowingstandard accessories:- Bushings- Oil conservator with oillevel indicator- Filling and drain valves- Oil sampling device -Earthing terminals - Lifting lugs - Jacking pads (radiator tanks) -Rating plate- Silica-gel breather- Buchholz relay- Top oilthermometer

    Additional accessories can be fitted in accor-dance with thecustomers specifications.

    Vacuum treatment Drying and vacuum treatment takes place inaspecial oven, where the windings are heatedelectrically whilesimultaneously the air isevacuated from the oven, reaching anabsolutepressure of 1 mbar. The transformer is filledwith oil whileit is still under vacuum. In thisway moisture and gases areeffectively remo-ved from the windings and oil.

    Bushings The bushings are of a solid porcelain type andlocatedon the cover. Bushing insulators canbe changed without opening thetransformer.The bushings comply with IEC 137.

    The terminals can be provided with an airinsulated enclosure.The enclosure can be on the primary and/or on the secondary sideandmay be constructed for cable or bus ductconnection. Alternativelythe transformers canbe provided with plug-in bushings.

    TestingAll transformers are manufactured accordingto the ISO9001 Quality System. The trans-formers are individually testedaccording toIEC standards.

    ABBs dry type transformers range from 30 kVA to 30 MVA, withprimary operating voltages up to41.5 kV and secondary operatingvoltages up to 36 kV.

    With the aim of minimising environmental contamination and firehazards, customers are increas-ingly requesting dry typetransformers. These transformers meet strict parameters withrespect toelectrical system demands and functioning in areas withextreme climatic conditions.

    Applications include high-density office buildings, nuclearpower plants, offshore drilling plat-forms, nuclear-powered navyvessels and high-volume industrial process plants.

    ABB dry type transformers fulfil the requirements ofinternational standards IEC 60726, as wellas the European HD464 andHD538.

    ABBs dry type transformers are virtually maintenance free andare manufactured in accordancewith the international qualitystandards ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

    Applications

    CoreABBs dry type transformers utilise a step-lap mitred coreconstruction to ensure optimum per-formance and minimum soundlevels. The mitred core joint allows efficient flux transferalongnatural grain lines between the core legs and yoke. Thestep-lap construction further enhances theefficiency of the jointby reducing joint fringing which reduces core losses and exisitingcurrents.

    The core is designed and built to provide the lowest possiblelosses from the effects of magnetichysteresis and eddy currents.All possible steps are taken to prevent local circulating currentsandto avoid built-in bending stresses.

    ABB starts with non-ageing highly permeable cold-rolled,grain-oriented silicon steel, andconstructs the core with step-lapmitred joints. Magnetic flux densities are kept well belowthesaturation point. The steel is precision cut to assure that itwill be smooth and burr-free. Forrigidity and support, the upperand lower yokes are solidly clamped to a sturdy metal frame.Thefinished core is coated with a corrosion resistant sealant whichprovides lamination cohesionand environmental protection.

    WindingsABBs windings construction depends on operating voltage,basic impulse level and currentcapacity of the individual winding.Typically, ABBs Low Voltage windings, insulation class 1.1 kV,arewound using sheet conductors. This construction allows free currentdistribution within theaxial width of the coil which eliminates theaxial forces developed in other types of windingsunder shortcircuit conditions.

    During the assembly process each Low Voltage winding is blockedradially and axially againstthe core using a combination of solidand resilient mounts for sound suppression and thermalexpansioncompensation.

    ABBs winding construction may be either round or oval up to 2500kVA. Windings on trans-formers with a rating greater than 2500 kVAare generally round.

    An experienced and dedicated work force ensures qualitytransformers and customer satisfactionwith the product.

    Description The ABB resin-encapsulated dry-type trans-former,RESIBLOC, offers specific advantages.For more than a quarter of acentury we havebeen using only epoxy resin and fibre-glasstoencapsulate the wire layers. Epoxy resinmoulding reinforced withfibre-glass rovingsis a material of outstanding strength.Further-more we manufacture RESIBLOC transformerswithout theaddition of extenders or plasticizers.Electronically controlledwinding processesensure uniform distribution of the glassrovingsand precise tracking.

    The Low Voltage and High Voltage windingsare joined adhesivelyby way of bars to forma compact block winding. Thefavourableimpulse voltage distribution resulting fromthe costlymultilayering of the High Voltagewinding in conjunction with theoutstandingstrength of the coil makes RESIBLOC resin-encapsulatedtransformers short-circuit proof.

    The fibre-glass reinforcement of the resin-encapsulated RESIBLOCwindings is so robustthat we have no hesitation in guaranteeingthecrack resistance of the High Voltage coilfor the entire life of thetransformer.

    IntroductionWith the increasing use and complexity ofvariablespeed drives for different applications,selecting the correctconverter transformer hasbecome of vital importance. Choosingthecorrect converter transformers for differentconverters and drivesystems means reduceddowntime, extended equipment life,reducedharmonic distortion and last, but not least,energysaving.

    ABB offers you a wide range of convertertransformers. Thetransformers have been de-veloped in close co-operation withconvertermanufacturers and with the aim of achievingthe highestpossible reliability and efficiency.

    ABB offers converter transformers for yourevery need:

    Input transformers for supply of drive systems6-, 12- or24-pulse supply for different converters, e.g.- load commutatedinverters- PWM inverters- six step inverters- cycloconverters (seeopposite) - cascade drives- diode and thyristor rectifiers

    Output transformersTransformers for voltage step-up fromconverter to motor (see opposite).

    Transformers for converter starting applicationsTransformers aremanufactured as oil-filled, either mineral, silicone or MIDELfluid, or asdry type transformers. They can be manu-factured withan output of up to approx. 30 MVA (primary power). A symmetricalimpedance and the capacity to withstand short circuiting areessential.

    Input transformers Why add an input transformer?

    Voltage adaptation Converter drives are normally fed bymediumvoltage networks from 6 kV up to 36 kV. Theconverter supplyvoltage usually ranges from400 V up to 4 kV. The inputtransformeradapts the medium network voltage to theconverter supplyvoltage.

    Galvanic isolationThe input transformer isolates theconverterfrom the feeding network and reduces shortcircuit currentsto the converter.

    EMCA specifically designed shield between trans-former windingsreduces transferred radiointerference from the drive to thenetwork.The earthed shield also protects the drivefrom transientover-voltages coming from thefeeding network.

    Harmonics reductionNetwork regulations require reduction ofhar-monic distortion. The transformer impedanceacts as acommutating reactor and thus reducesharmonics. Differenttransformer connectionsare used to achieve multi-pulse systemswithsubstantial harmonic reduction.

    Transformers for cycloconverter supplyCycloconverters are usedfor high power, lowspeed synchronous motor drives such as:- Rollingmill drives- Ship propulsion (see below)- Mine hoist drives- Windtunnel drives etc.

    The main parts of a cycloconverter drive aresupply transformers,the cycloconverter, highspeed circuit breakers and thesynchronousmotor. The following types of transformersare used:- 2winding transformers- 3 winding transformers- 4 windingtransformers

    Output transformers for converters Converters are available foronly a limitedrange of standard motor voltages, the highestbeing 4kV. A specially designed transformercan be used to transform theconverter outputvoltage to match any motor rated voltage.Normallythe voltage is raised from the LowVoltage converter to feed an HVmotor. (Thusthe name converter step-up transformer,which is alsocommonly used.)

    A standard transformer cannot be used dueto variation infrequency, the harmonic distor-tion and the DC component existingduringtransients in the output voltage of the frequencyconverter. Aspecial step-up transformer hastherefore been developed for thisapplicationin co-operation with converter manufacturers.

    Typical applications Most typical applications are forsubmersibleoil pump drives, rolling mill drives andsimilarequipment where only HV motor applicationsare available.Output transformers can also beapplied to reduce the voltage at theend of along transmission system to be more appro-priate for amotor. The output step downtransformers in the latest applicationsare submersible i.e. they are placed on the seabedclose to themotor.

    Typical applications for output transformersare when:- The motordoes not have a standard voltage

    converter (retrofit or by-pass application required)

    - Distance from the converter to the drive is long and a highvoltage motor is used to reduce cabling costs, or where low voltagecabling would not be feasible due to losses and voltage drop

    - Cost of a high voltage converter is too high compared with alow voltage converter and an output transformer (low end rating oftheconverters)

    - Tappings are required to match the drive todifferent motorvoltages or different cable lengths

    Output transformers are produced in oil typeand dry typeconfigurations up to 6 MVAratings for various types of converterand output voltages up to 15 kV. Transformers are individuallydesigned and manufacturedaccording to system requirements.

    Ship propulsion systems Electric propulsion for marineapplicationswas initially used on holiday cruises forreasons ofcomfort (i.e. lower vibrations com-pared to mechanical propulsion).Nowadays it is also applied to cargo ships, icebreakers,ferryboatsetc. due to the installation andmanoeuvring flexibility of motorgroups andfor space rationalisation as well as for theimprovementin the systems global perfor-mance.

    These transformers adapt the generatedvoltage to the voltage ofthe static converterswhich control the motors. They are designedtoparticular specifications to meet specificspace problems (e.g.height limitations) andthe presence of high harmonic currentsaswell as mechanical vibrations coming fromthe ships structure.

    IntroductionSngle-phase and/or three-phase reactorsarecharacterised by a wide range of solutionsfound in several HighVoltage and/or MediumVoltage installations for both oil-type anddrypurposes.

    Reactors for cycloconverter drivesZero sequence reactorsZerosequence reactors are used to limit zerosequence current on motorswith galvanicallyseparated windings. The reactors are individu-allydesigned and manufactured according tosystem requirements.Therefore no standardtypes are listed.

    Commutation reactorsDirect cycloconverters without supplytrans-formers (e.g. propulsion and other drives wherespace andweight limitations are important)are usually fitted withcommutation reactors.The reactors reduce the commutationcurrentsand notches in the system voltage. Thecommutation reactorsare normally dry-typebut can also be manufactured as oilimmersed.

    Two basic designs are used:1. Saturable gapped core reactors

    - no short circuit current limitation is needed

    2. Non-saturable type reactors- the reactor also works as ashort circuit limiting reactor

    The commutation reactors are individuallydesigned andmanufactured according tosystem requirements.

    Duplex reactorsDuplex reactors are special commutationreactorsused in propulsion drives to achievedistortion free voltage in theauxiliary circuits.The most efficient harmonic reduction isachieved when the duplex reactors are con-nected to the generators,one to each generator. In this way the effect on harmonics doesnotdepend on the operation. The duplex reactorsare individuallydesigned and manufacturedaccording to system requirements.Single-phaseand/or three-phase reactors are characterisedby a widerange of solutions found in severalhigh voltage and medium voltageinstallationsfor both oil and dry purposes.
